Re: Using .tga format maps in OziExporer
August 15, 2008 by mymotion
I don't think I can help much.
My philisophy was to make the map format I used simple and open, because my application is free. You can find the format of a .tgz here and on my main web page; it is just a zipped jpeg and coords files.
Commercial applications tend to use proprietary map formats that they don't make public. It locks people into their applications.
Since I don't know (and can't find out) the format of ozi map files a conversion either way is not possible by me.
You would be better off asking the author of Ozi if he would add a converter to read .tgz.
Why is it you want the map in ozi format? Have you tried using MyMotion ;-)
Re: makemymap: "a required privlege is not held by client" fix? Alternative: make a tgz manually
August 5, 2008 by mymotion
No idea why, and I have no workaround other than what you already did (find the files and manually zip), or to run with Administrator rights.
I'll have to wait from someone to fix FBzip or hunt around for another free zip utility that works on all platforms.

Could you give this a try on Vista and tell me if it works?

Thanks

I'm not sure what the problem with Vista is, I have not been able to reproduce (maybe because I have administrator rights). Exactly when does this error occur (after pressing which button)?
In the meantime here is a sample .tgz that you can download and extract the contents from to see how it works (rename to zip). http://users.bigpond.net.au/ian_pendlebury/detroit.tgz
16 bit tga should be OK, the issue with making it by hand is getting square numbers for the dimensions (an opengl texture requirement). I use the "convert" utility to do this - you will find it installed in the makemymap area, it should work from the command line. You can use it to convert to TGA and stretch/shrink at the same time.

The .tr? and .km? both include altitude already.
If you export a KML file it calculates and adds speed and distance metadata and adds these as KML folders that you can turn on/off.
If you keep all your tracks as .trz you can read them back and export as .kmz later to add the metadata.
What is missing is a way to allow soome user control over this...I'll add that one day I guess.
To see altitude in Google Earth, open up the folders until you find the "track" node in the track folder then pull up the properties with the right mouse. Within the properties you will find an Altitude tab where you can show it in various ways.
Re: makemymap - error: not a valid number
July 8, 2008 by mymotion
It should all work regardless of locale now, I have tested it in English and Finnish!!
The fixed version is 1.43 from the main page: http://users.bigpond.net.au/ian_pendlebury/makemapsetup.exe
Thanks for reporting the problem.

I'm stabbing in the dark though as I can't reproduce the problem.
NOTE this link will only work for a while as I don't have space to keep multiple versions
Please let me know if this helps.
Re: makemymap - error: not a valid number

All the systems I have tested on have been English language OS, what locale is yours?
If I can't find a reason I will just take out the error check, but it would be nice to know why.
Re: makemymap - error: not a valid number
July 6, 2008 by mymotion
Can you confirm you are not actually putting quotes into the text field, just numbers.
The app checks each character as it is typed, when do you get the error on the first number or when you change the field?
I can't reproduce this at the moment. I will try on a few other systems.
Re: makemymap need an improvement

Make sure you have v1.41 (it should say 1.41 in the title bar). Start button problems were fixed in v1.41.
I moved the link above to be the main (latest) version, as I don't have enough web space to keep multiple versions.
Re: makemymap - error: not a valid number
July 6, 2008 by mymotion
I haven't seen this. I guess it could be some problem with Vista as all my development and testing has been on XP. Another possibility is the version of Google Earth you are using. I will have to try to get access to Vista to try which might take a while (as I am trying to avoid it!). You should be able to type the coords in manually. Not sure why there would be Java errors, I have not used Java anywhere. MakeMyMap is written in VisualBasic (to allow access to the Google Earth API).
Could you confirm the version of Google Earth you are using and any other error messages you see.
Re: MyMotion 1.1

I have seen this happen when the device is running low on memory. Try monitoring how much memory is being used, close (terminate) any other apps you are not using, limit to just one map and try again.

June 19, 2008 by mymotion
Are you using a kml to reference the kmz? Did you try changing the values in the the kml reference?
I'm not sure if that would overide the values in the network linked file, but it would be worth experimenting what can be done from within Google Earth.
Other than that I'll have to think of a way of allowing the user to provide new defaults...or maybe not provide them at all and so allow the to be set manually in the referring kml.

Co-ordinates at pixel positions? Good idea. Next time I get some time I will investigate.
MakeMyMap 1.4
June 6, 2008 by mymotion
- Removed the dependency on a separate ImageMagick install (I think!)
- Increased max dimension of output maps to 2048
If you would like to install and let me know if it works get it from here: http://users.bigpond.net.au/ian_pendlebury/makemapsetup14.exe I will move this to the main download after a couple of days
Re: ftp upload ain't working
June 2, 2008 by mymotion
Glad you got it working.
Not sure why your URL didn't work, I guess it is not resolvable from your device for some reason. Maybe a DNS issue? I'm not sure. You should be able to check by putting the same URL into the browser on your device and see if it can find it. If you have it working it doesn't really matter, but URLs should work , that is what I use on my device.
Regarding the install, the one from my web page ( http://users.bigpond.net.au/ian_pendlebury/mymad.htm ) definitely supports installation to Storage Card, you need to do an ActiveSync install. Is that where you got the install from? The freeware sites copied the binary from my site (without my permission) and have done all sorts of things with it, including extracting the CAB file from the exe and posting it on their web sites. I think CAB file installs are restricted. Anyway, if you have any problems get the latest version from my site as step 1.
Re: ftp upload ain't working
June 1, 2008 by mymotion
Those ftp addresses you wrote are invalid. It should be "ftp.foohost.net" , there is no "www" or "http" in an a ftp address. Stricly speaking the full address would be "ftp://ftp.foohost.com" , the bit at the front is optional.
Once you have the address right, try putting it into a browser as a URL - is it a really an ftp site with an ftp server running? Does it ask you for a password?
You need to sort this out before proceeding.
If it turns out you don't actually have an ftp site you can access, you can get a free one here: http://asphost4free.com/

- Added "Fly To" feature to allow viewing of maps when you are in a different location.
- Improved Zoom and Pan combination.
- Remember file type after Save or Open and use it next time.
Re: ftp upload ain't working
May 31, 2008 by mymotion
Check you have MyMotion 1.02, earlier versions had a bug with this.
Check your ftp address, username and password supplied on the Upload Preferences page (ie on a PC, verify they work and you can access the site and have space to upload files).
If Upload is enabled (via the Ftp Auto Upload setting) you will see a report on the text Summary screen, right at the bottom it gives an Upload summary either OK with the number of bytes, or "failed" - do you see this?
Look for a file on your ftp site called LL.device.* where device is the ID of your device.
If GPRS is not already connected, does Upload connect it for you (it should - and that would show it was trying to connect)?
Any other symptoms - does it freeze or anything?
MakeMyMap 1.3
May 30, 2008 by mymotion
In response to reports from Jorma and others regarding problems with commas in MakeMyMap 1.2 I have improved the functionality to trap this and other problems.
Since you folks have taken the time to give me feedback, I'll give you first opportunity to try the new version.
Please let me know if it works then I will put a link on the main page.
Here is the fixed version: http://users.bigpond.net.au/ian_pendlebury/makemapsetup130.exe
Re: Google maps not loading
May 25, 2008 by mymotion
I don't see the file. Use the "Messages" area at the very top of the web page (next to logout & Edit your profile). Then send a message to "mymotion" and Upload File.
Re: A file to see what you can get with mymotion
May 25, 2008 by mymotion
Nice Jorma.
I run listening to music and MyMotion too.
There is sometimes a little bit of error in the GPS signal it is normal. This happens mostly when you have a poor signal, maybe heavy cloud or running near power lines. I wouldn't bother trying to fix the coordinates.
I didn't set .kmz as the default as it doesn't contain all the recorded data, just a subset. I could set it as the default though. I'll add that idea to the list.
NOTE: I've been in touch with the guys at http://runometer.com apparently people are trying to load mymotion .kmz files up to their site. Cool idea, it doesn't work yet but you can expect to see interesting developments here I think.

Could you send me the .tgz file so I can check it? You can use the private Message facility of this forum (top right of the web page) to send me a message and attach a file.
Re: Google maps not loading
May 23, 2008 by mymotion
Did you see the response above? I'll repeat it here:
If you can see the map under Maps in Preferences then I think it loaded OK.
So, now all you need to do is get a GPS signal and if your location is within the coordinates supplied for the map, it will display it. If you are not getting a GPS signal then set up NMEA via Preferences.
Have you done that, got a signal within the map?
If the map is of an area which is not your current location, try getting a GPS signal then zooming out the map (down arrow) until it appears.
Do you see the base map of the world?
Re: How to Upload?
May 22, 2008 by mymotion
Hi Aliard,
The biggest issues with showing your realtime position during a 100km will be
a) power - you will need more than one battery, or will need to re-charge.
b) robustness - if your phone is anything like mine it will freeze and need a reset every now and then. I also found if my phone could not get a GPRS signal the upload would sometimes lock up MyMotion.
I factored these in when designing MyMotion. The simplest way to show your position live is to send your location to an ftp site at a predefined interval. If your phone needs to be reset, just start MyMotion again and everything will continue. I also added power management to get the maximum life out of your battery. On the General preference there is a mode called "black box"; if you pick this MyMotion will allow the phone to sleep for 10 minutes then wake it up for long enough to get a signal and post it to the ftp site, then allow it to sleep again. Using this mode I could get about 10 hours of continuous usage out of one battery (whereas you would typically only get 1 or 2 otherwise).
With the ftp upload, here is what I recommend.
1. Make sure you are using the latest version of MyMotion
2. Use "Current Loc" as the Upload Type from the Preferences
3. Fill out your ftp info and select Auto Upload (yes, you need your own ftp site)
4. If the ftp site/username/password you supply is all OK, this should post a file called LL.deviceid.kmz to your ftp site each time interval or when you go Tools->File->Upload Now. The device ID is unique to your PDA, you can get it from Tools->Help->Register (press Cancel after)
5. You can pull down the kmz file via a PC script, program or something else of your creation, but what I found best was to use the network link feature with kml files. This allows you to link a PC based kml to a web based kmz via a URL and auto refresh at a specified interval. You can then just open this kml file up in Google Earth and it (and your PDA) will do the rest.. fingers crossed.
Here is a template network link kml file you can use (after changing the highlighted fields to your own values), just cut and paste it into a file and save it with the suffix kml, save it to your PC and open it up in GE (NOTE: you can also send it to other people if you want them to know where you are too!):
<kml xmlns="http://earth.google.com/kml/2.0">
<LookAt>
<longitude>150.00</longitude>
<latitude>-38.00</latitude>
<range>10000.0</range>
<tilt>45</tilt>
<heading>0.0</heading>
</LookAt>
<NetworkLink>
<description>Dynamic network link to name GPS phone</description>
<name>link.kml</name>
<link>
<href>http://yourwebaddress/LL.deviceid.kmz</href>
<refreshMode>onInterval</refreshMode>
<refreshInterval>400</refreshInterval>
</NetworkLink>
<styleUrl>root://styles#default+icon=0x307</styleUrl>
