Hi.
i think this app is a great tool - if only i could get it to work.
i follow all steps and when choosing "get from GE" i get four errors saying: "Not a valid number" and Start button remains disabled.
Using MakeMyMap 1.41

thanx for any suggestions

I have the exact same problem. Using vista and also getting some generic java runtime errors as well. For the time I got this to work it bugs me with "Not valid number" message and wont let me start.

Also using 1.41

I haven't seen this. I guess it could be some problem with Vista as all my development and testing has been on XP. Another possibility is the version of Google Earth you are using. I will have to try to get access to Vista to try which might take a while (as I am trying to avoid it!). You should be able to type the coords in manually. Not sure why there would be Java errors, I have not used Java anywhere. MakeMyMap is written in VisualBasic (to allow access to the Google Earth API).

Could you confirm the version of Google Earth you are using and any other error messages you see.

Yea your right, no java errors there... Took a quick look and thought those were from java engine.

I examined this error more deeply this morning on my Vista desktop. If I run MakeMyMap with normal privileges I keep getting the "Not valid number: xx.xxxxxxx" error twice on every number and the start button stays gray so I can't start it. If then again I run the program with admin privileges, I get System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException error. Something about COM-classfactor retrieval error number 80080005. Typing numbers manually didn't work eighter, if I run it with normal rights it gives the same number errors and with elevated rights it crashes with the error.

Trying it on my XP laptop now to see how it works. Vista is a bit quirky with programs not designed to it...

Oh and my GE version was 4.2.0205.5730
Getting 4.3 now to see if it makes any difference.

Ok tried on my XP -laptop and didn't work. I keep getting the "Not valid number error". Numbers are for example "61.3764482335063". Typing manually gives same error. I used GE version 4.3 and makemymap version 1.41. Clean install on both.

After "Not a valid number:" what does it write? ie it should be "Not a valid number: X".
Can you confirm you are not actually putting quotes into the text field, just numbers.
The app checks each character as it is typed, when do you get the error on the first number or when you change the field?
I can't reproduce this at the moment. I will try on a few other systems.

I just tried and for me it gives the error when I type in the third character. Fourth if I put a zero first. I get the error no matter what the third char is. Number, dot or coma will produce the same error. Interesting is that "-" as third character wont produce the error but the error comes if I put anything after it (just trying every possible combination...). After the third (or fourth if zero was first) character it gives the error after every new character. If I use "Get from GE" option it spams the error twice for each field.

I'm not trying to put quotes there, just numbers. Are the coordinates supposed to be in the aforementioned form (e.g. 61.3764482335063)? This is the form that GE produces for makemymap. That dot supposed to be there? The error it gives is exactly like this: "Not a valid number: 61.3764482335063".
For me this happens on both Vista and XP.

Exactly the same thing. Im not putting any numbers myself, these are taken from GE automatically after i select the input file, name the outfile file and click on the "get from GE" button.

I've tested with the very latest GE and on Vista now, and I can't reproduce this. The only time I see an error is if I manually type in a letter instead of a number OR manually enter something smaller than -180 or greater than 180 (the limits which are tested for), this is what is supposed to happen.
All the systems I have tested on have been English language OS, what locale is yours?
If I can't find a reason I will just take out the error check, but it would be nice to know why.

OK, I've tried improving a couple of things (ie, checking that GE has initialised before grabbing the coords). Give this a try: http://users.bigpond.net.au/ian_pendlebury/makemapsetup142.exe
I'm stabbing in the dark though as I can't reproduce the problem.
NOTE this link will only work for a while as I don't have space to keep multiple versions
Please let me know if this helps.

Ok I tried to change locale on my Vista from finnish to english (us) and to my great surprise I didn't get the "Not valid number error" anymore and the start button came alive. So changing locale clearly had an effect. It still crashed with the runtime error as before but it stopped bugging me about the numbers.

Ok now I got it to work on my XP. I changed everything to english (input, locale etc.) and it works perfectly. So I guess it has to be something to do with locale settings.

On my XP I got the older version, ie. makemymap 1.41.

Now I know the source is a non English locale I should be able to reproduce. I'll respond here when I have figured it out and fixed it.

OK, it is fixed now. It was a problem with "," and "." again.
It should all work regardless of locale now, I have tested it in English and Finnish!!
The fixed version is 1.43 from the main page: http://users.bigpond.net.au/ian_pendlebury/makemapsetup.exe
Thanks for reporting the problem.

Great work, thanks a lot. Still crashes under Vista though but no matter, I can use it on my laptop. Excellent tool for keeping track of myself. =)
